CTA Obstetric CPD Courses - Next: Oct 16/17th 2010
Program Structure – Obstetrics
This program is written for the College of Traditional Acupuncture (CTA) / Oxford Brookes University MA Acupuncture degree course. The module is referred to as MA 5, and has 4 teaching days.
PART A) October 16/17th 2010
This course will run as only a 2 day CPD, as the foundation program for joining ACT
Days 1& 2 are structured as a foundation for safe and effective practice of obstetric acupuncture.
This 2 day curriculum covers:
• Both the Western understanding of the physio/pathologies of pregnancy and childbirth, with a particular emphasis on understanding the red flags, as well as acupuncture treatment for ante-natal, pre-labour, intra-partum, post-partum, miscarriage and mal-position.
• The course will cover the use of Chinese medical diagnostics as specific to obstetrics; using the obstetric history, the medical history, obstetric signs and symptoms, pulse and tongue, and palpation. Acupuncture treatment is discussed in particular reference to the effect of the underlying constitutional condition on the overlying condition of pregnancy.
• The course is designed to equip the acupuncturist to safely and effectively adjunct western maternity care. There is a continuous discussion of ‘scope of practice’ throughout the 4 teaching days. This course is designed to effectively equip the acupuncturist to fully understand the limitations of acupuncture treatment, as well as to highlight the opportunities to utilise acupuncture as a safe and effective adjunct or alternative to the western protocol treatment.
• All aspects of western obstetric intervention treatment will be covered to include: ultrasound, cervical examination, ECV, medical induction, foetal heart monitoring, ARM, epidural, pharmaceutical pain relief, caesarean section, and suturing.
• Relevant research in the subject of obstetric acupuncture and acupressure will be referenced and referred to throughout the course, as well as relevant studies pertaining to western intervention treatments.
PART B) the next 4 day course will be in 2011, dates yet to be confirmed
Days 3 & 4 are structured to provide application to practical work:
• Palpation, examination, point selection, needling techniques, types of needles and auxiliary treatments, as well as treatment duration and frequency will be discussed through the use of case histories, and through practice work in a clinical classroom setting.
• These 2 days present the opportunity for further discussion of the subjects raised in days 1 & 2, and considerations of scope of practice and integration of services is highlighted.
Delegates applying for Part B, days 3& 4, must have done Part A, days 1 & 2, OR must have attended a previous obstetric acupuncture seminar with a comparable curriculum – for example the Betts/Budd RCP seminar Oct 06, or the Betts seminar Brighton Sept 07.
